Changes to the Safe Environment Program

Effective July I, 2015, the Archdiocese of Seattle has changed vendors and is now using VIRTUS for its training as well as for tracking Safe Environment compliance. VIRTUS offers a comprehensive program, including Safe Environment training for adults as well as children and youth. VIRTUS also provides a more convenient way for participants to register, read and sign Safe Environment policies online, fill out information for a criminal background check and register for a Safe Environment class.

All current employees and volunteers who have already completed the Safe Environment requirements will be automatically transferred into the new database. VIRTUS will send log-on information to every current participant by the end of August. Those who have already attended a Called to Protect for Ministries class will not be required to take the VIRTUS foundation class, Protecting God’s Children. These individuals will be notified by VIRTUS when it is time to renew their background check and/or take an online refresher course, which is now required every three years.

New employees and volunteers will be able to log-on to, establish their account and follow the steps to becoming compliant with all Safe Environment requirements. Each parish and school in the Archdiocese of Seattle has a designated Safe Environment coordinator who will be assisting employees, volunteers and parents with this transition. Watch for more information in the coming weeks. Please do not hesitate to contact your coordinator with your questions or concerns.

As always, we thank you for your commitment to keeping our parishes and schools safe and healthy for our children, youth and vulnerable adults.
