ROPE - 8th Grade Capstone Project

3 students looking at flowers

Your ROPE (Right of Passage Experience) is intended to be a culminating experience for your time at Sacred Heart School. As such, it requires serious work and preparation on your part. Most importantly, though, it should be an opportunity for you to carefully and prayerfully reflect on how you have grown as a person and as a Christian during your time here and to set goals for high school.

Your presentation should address four important areas:

Area 1

In what way have I developed my character during my time here at Sacred Heart School (one way)?

Area 2

What specific things have I learned, read, experienced, or done here at school that helped me to develop this part of my character?

Area 3

What is my personal goal for four years from now (including two or three practical steps that you will take to reach this goal). This goal does not have to be connected to the first part of your presentation.

Area 4

How do I demonstrate the SLE’s (Schoolwide Learning Expectations) in my words and actions? Please select one SLE from each section (#1-4) to discuss in your presentation.

Creating Your Presentation

  • Start with brainstorming. Write down everything you might want to include—focus on personal stories that reflect who you are.
  • Organize your ideas. Put each idea on a separate note card or slide. Each should focus on just one topic (e.g., your main theme, a character trait you’ve developed, or your four-year goal).
  • Arrange your content. Put your cards/slides in a logical order that flows well.
  • Edit thoughtfully. Remove anything that doesn’t help your audience understand who you are, how you’ve grown at SHS, or what you hope to achieve. Aim to keep your presentation under 20 minutes.
  • Build your visuals. Turn your note cards into a PowerPoint or Sway presentation. Each slide should include just a word or two, a short quote, or an image—something to guide your talking points.
  • Reflect your journey. You don’t need to cover every year at SHS, but you can include any part of your experience that’s meaningful to you.

Presentation Tips

  • Use sound, music, and special effects sparingly. Only include them if they clearly enhance understanding or highlight something unique about you. Otherwise, they may distract from your message.
  • Props and visuals should serve a purpose. Ask yourself: Does this help my audience understand better? Does it reflect who I am? If the answer is yes, include it—if not, leave it out.
  • Keep slides clean and focused. Avoid overcrowding them with text, and never just read your slides aloud. Use them to support your message, not replace it.

ROPE Project Presentation Preparation Guide

  • Rehearse Your Presentation - Once your presentation is ready, practice it a few times. If possible, ask a friend or someone else to watch and give you feedback. Don’t over-rehearse—know your material well, but avoid memorizing it word for word.

  • Make Revisions - Use the feedback you receive and your own observations to make any necessary changes to your presentation.

  • Dress Professionally - This is a formal presentation, so dress appropriately to reflect that.

  • Prepare Your Technology - A computer display and adapter will be available. Bring your presentation on a thumb drive and also save it to OneDrive. If you're using a Mac or any special technology, make arrangements ahead of time.

  • Schedule Your Presentation - You will schedule your presentation time using a Microsoft Bookings link. This link will be sent out in the spring, so keep an eye on your email and follow the instructions provided.

  • Invite Guests - You may invite family members and teachers, including siblings who attend SHS. Invite teachers as early as possible, understanding they may not be able to attend. If you plan to have more than six guests, notify the school at least two days in advance.
